If customers already search your category frequently, fix Google first. If the category needs inspiration, demonstration or visual desire, social usually deserves more creative attention. Most healthy local businesses eventually need both.
Instagram and Google are doing different jobs
Comparing them only by reach is the wrong comparison. Instagram is excellent at making somebody notice, remember and want something they were not actively searching for. Google is strongest when somebody already knows what they need and wants the best nearby option.
Choose Google first when intent is obvious
Think dentist, repair shop, diagnostic centre, tuition centre, banquet hall or “gym near me.” The customer often starts with a search. In that case, an incomplete Business Profile, weak photos or poor contact information can cost more than a quiet Instagram page.
Choose Instagram first when the product needs to be seen
Restaurants, salons, fashion, cafés, interiors, fitness transformations and experiential businesses benefit from showing the thing. Reels can demonstrate atmosphere, product, process and proof in a way a search listing cannot.
The useful combination
A person sees your reel today. Two weeks later they need the category. They do not remember the handle perfectly, so they search the name. Your Google profile then has to finish the job: correct location, good recent photos, clear hours, reviews and one-tap contact.
That is the system. Social makes the name familiar. Search makes the familiar name easy to choose.
Do not copy-paste the same strategy
Instagram needs hooks, visual pacing and reasons to stop scrolling. Google needs accurate business data, intent-led service information and proof. Treating one as a reposting destination for the other weakens both.
Where paid ads fit
Meta ads are often useful for discovery and retargeting. Google Search ads are useful when the query itself shows buying intent. The right split depends on category, ticket size, geography and the quality of the offer — not on which dashboard looks busier.
